Counselling for Neurodiverse Clients
In my work at Relate I often counselled couples where one partner, or sometimes both, either discovered during their sessions that they were on the Autistic Spectrum or 'identified' as neurodivergent before they came. I then tailored the counselling to give both partners effective help and support. I became interested in counselling people on the autistic spectrum through Relate training by Maxine Aston, the renowned author and health psychologist. www.maxineaston.co.uk.
After leaving Relate and starting my private practice I became interested in learning more about neurodiversity and read widely. In recent years I have taken part in further training with Aspire Autism Consultancy. www.aspireautismconsultancy.co.uk I attend a monthly CPD (Continuing Professional Development) group facilitated by Aspire to keep up to date with new developments in neurodiversity research and to augment my learning and skills in counselling neurodiverse clients, working with individuals and couples. I use my understanding of theory of mind, how people relate and how the brain organises executive functioning to be aware of the different ways in which individuals think, communicate and behave.
I work with people who have a formal diagnosis or who are undiagnosed or 'not sure'. I take time to get to know you and work with you to find an approach which suits your individual needs. Everyone on the neuro-diverse spectrum experiences life in their own unique way. I am also aware that women and girls present differently to men and boys and often it might not have been picked up that they are on the autistic spectrum or have ADHD.
Common issues clients bring include challenges with communication and managing daily life with competing demands from work, relationships, parenting and financial responsibilities. I help couples to understand each other's needs and help them improve their communication. Working together we can often think of new ways to navigate daily life so that stress and anxiety are managed better. I enjoy working with clients on practical solutions to the problems they bring. I find helping my clients to develop their social confidence and self -esteem and learn to be appropriately assertive and advocate for themselves very rewarding.
